Declarations as people give

When someone gives in the app or on your giving page, they can tick a Gift Aid declaration with their name and home address. It's stored against every gift that follows.

Rows ready for HMRC

Export the eligible donations in the layout HMRC's Gift Aid schedule spreadsheet uses, then submit through Charities Online. Your church stays in control of the claim.

Records kept for you

Declarations, gifts and cancellations are kept on record, so you can show HMRC who declared what, and when.

How Gift Aid works for a church

If your church is recognised as a charity for tax purposes, you can claim 25p back from HMRC for every £1 given by someone who pays UK Income Tax or Capital Gains Tax and has made a Gift Aid declaration. The donor must have paid at least as much tax that year as all the charities they give to claim on their gifts.

A declaration needs your church's name, the donor's full name and home address, whether it covers just one gift or past and future gifts too, and a statement that the donor wants Gift Aid to apply. It also has to explain that the donor must pay enough tax to cover what's claimed.

The small donations scheme

Cash and contactless gifts of £30 or less, like the collection plate, can qualify without a declaration under the Gift Aid Small Donations Scheme (GASDS). You can claim 25% on up to £8,000 of these gifts in a tax year, a top-up of up to £2,000, as long as your church also claims ordinary Gift Aid that year.

Your small-donations claim can't be more than 10 times your Gift Aid claim, and churches with a community building can sometimes claim more. Check HMRC's guidance if that applies to you.

FAQ

Common questions.

Does Aurnet submit our Gift Aid claim to HMRC?

No. Aurnet collects declarations and gives you the claim rows in the layout HMRC's schedule spreadsheet uses. Your church submits the claim through HMRC's Charities Online service, so it always stays your claim.

How long do we have to claim?

Usually within 4 years of the end of the financial period the gift was received in. Small donations scheme claims must be made within 2 years of the end of the tax year the gifts were collected in. HMRC pays online claims by BACS, normally within 4 weeks.

How long must we keep declarations?

Most charities must keep declaration records for 6 years from the end of the accounting period they relate to. Declarations that cover regular gifts, such as a standing order, should be kept for as long as the gifts continue and 6 years after the last one.

Can someone cancel their declaration?

Yes, at any time, for example if they stop paying UK tax. Gifts already made stay eligible; gifts after the cancellation don't.

Is Gift Aid available outside the UK?

No. Gift Aid is a UK tax relief. Aurnet only shows it to churches whose country is set to the United Kingdom.

Do we need software to claim?

Claims of more than 1,000 donations must be made with software; smaller claims can use HMRC's spreadsheet. Aurnet produces the rows for the spreadsheet route.
